If you have a disability and live in Oklahoma, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to help yourself. Yes, you can, and we want to provide you with some relevant information on disabilities. This information will help you figure out your best first step. Most disability lawyers oklahoma have websites and contact information for agencies which offer help. What’s more, the information you receive will allow you to find and use assistive resources throughout the State of Oklahoma.

If you or someone you love is dealing with the disabilities Oklahoma has many helpful disability advocacy departments. These departments help answer any question you may have. For example, Oklahoma has assistive technology services, educational programs, employment help, housing help, support groups, etc. Some people with disabilities have no idea there is a way forward for them to go to school, get a job or any other different service they need. Yet, these programs and departments are available.

What Is The First Step?

If you haven’t done so, the first step you take if you have a disability is filing for disability through the Social Security Office. There is a simple form to fill out to see if you qualify for the two programs offered by the social security disability office. The first program for social security disability is SSDI. It is based on you being unable to work for the past twelve months or you expect to be unable to work for the next twelve continuous months. The amount you receive is based on the work you did before becoming disabled.

The second program for social security disability is SSI. It is your Supplemental Security Income Disability which is based on your current financial need. You don’t have to worry about which one to apply for because when you fill out your SSDI application because social security places your application in SSI and SSDI processing. If you meet one or both the SSI/SSDI criteria you will have an interview. Sometimes the interview is on the phone and sometimes it is in person.

Since there is no official online SSI application, the in-person or telephone interview is mandatory. During the telephone or in-person interview, your social security representative fills out your medical and work information. They also have you sign the medical release form to get your medical records.  At that time, your disability application with Social Security goes to Oklahoma’s state disability agency. This is the agency which makes medical determinations for both SSI and SSDI claim applications.

Is There Anything Else I Can Do?

If your disability is denied you need to appeal the denial. It is common for people to give up if they receive a denial for their SSDI or SSI. If your application is denied understand 70% of first-time applications are denied. What’s more over 50% of those who appeal the decision go on and receive SSDI or SSI. The important thing is to never give up!
